New media theorist and artist Lev Manovich, author of The Language of New Media, talks about his Soft Cinema project, aesthetics of the database and the influence of computers on cinema.

The original presentation of the video was done in Adobe Flash as an interactive video. The specific interaction design was a response to the technical constraints of that time: bandwidth was very limited, and accessing a later point in a video required preloading the entire media file first. In 2026, the no longer functional Flash version was replaced with an implementation in JavaScript that tries to preserve the original interactive experience. However, the video player now uses the full resolution of the original miniDV recording.
